Lana floored her tiny rental, swerving in and out of traffic to keep up with the black Range Rover in front of her.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck, people! Get outta my way!” she cursed through gritted teeth.

Whatever had set off Chance had him driving like a man possessed by the spirit of Hermes himself. Following him to the church had been relatively easy with the slow traffic and the accident on the way there. This little scene straight out of Bullet sucked. She was no Steve McQueen, and this piece of shit was no Mustang.

She blew through a yellow light. A green cab honked in protest as she cut him off.

Lana glanced in her rear view for the local boys in blue. No sign. She kept the pace wishing she could have afforded something with a little bigger engine. What was he up too? She found it hard to believe that he had suddenly detected her. He had no idea she followed him. No way had she set him off on this little race.

Lana ran through a red light.

“Oops.”

She felt a little vindicated in her reasoning to follow Chance instead of the doctor. Whatever he intended at the church, something else had come up, and she suspected it might be significant enough to shed some light on Charlie’s role in whatever the hell was going on.

Lana wondered if the drummer knew that someone else seemed to be following him other than herself.

Maybe the other guy at the church had sent him speeding off. The other stealthy observer had skills. She barely saw him at all, hiding just on the edge of an alley across from the St. Thomas’. Someone with less honed senses might not have seen him at all, or might have mistaken him for a homeless drifter.

The second watcher definitely had an eye for Charlie Chance. She had no doubts whatsoever that the man either trailed the doc’s friend or had been staking the place out. Waiting for him? Or the doc? This mystery around rock star and the doctor just grew thicker.

Morgues, End-of-the-World visions, old Catholic Churches, and now another swimmer in the water. Lana wished she knew what all of this meant.

The Rover half a block in front of her narrowly missed a parked car. She brought her attention fully back to keeping up with her quarry. Charlie tore down a side street, roaring over light rail tracks. She followed as close as she could without pushing the envelope and blowing her clandestine pursuit.

A stoplight later, he turned down another street, slowing a bit.

“Looking for parking, my friend?” Lana asked as she pulled directly in behind the Rover.

The truck slowed even more, nearly stopping in the middle of the block and the center of traffic. Now that she had got so close, Lana could see Charlie and his roadie looking out the passenger’s window as if searching for something. Maybe Jones? She cast a quick glance to the sidewalk but didn’t see the doctor. She looked back to the Rover’s driver.
